But turn positive a few days after missed period? Or this brand’s early detector test kit is very accurate even when you test a week before due date? Thanks in adv!

- 2023-02-13Hello everyone! Excited to “see” you! I am Dr Smily Lock, Head of Healthcare Solutions - Chronic and Long-Term Care.
A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 23 weeks. The main signs of a miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, and missed pregnancy symptoms followed by cramping and pain. Various factors increase the risk of miscarriage. You can learn here many more things about miscarriages and their causes.
---------------------------------------
Here are some questions asked in our community, and we got the answers for you ✅
👩💼Which food can cause miscarriage in pregnancy?
👩🔬Hi there, thanks for your question. Certain maternal infections like Listeria monocytogenes can lead to miscarriage. To prevent listeriosis, avoid eating these foods in pregnancy: unpasteurised milk and soft cheeses, refrigerated pate and meat spreads, refrigerated smoked seafood and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Raw or undercooked meat should also be avoided during pregnancy due to risk of toxoplasmosis, an infection with bacteria often found in raw meat. - Dr Smily
👩💼Can pregnancy stress cause miscarriage?
👩🔬Hi there, thanks for your question. The most common causes of miscarriage include chromosomal abnormalities, congenital abnormalities, endocrine disorders and clotting disorders. Pregnancy stress is not a major cause of miscarriage. - Dr Smily
👩💼Is brown discharge in the 2nd trimester a sign of miscarriage?
👩🔬 Hi there, thanks for your question. Discharge during pregnancy should be assessed by an obstetrician - do seek a medical consultation early if you do experience such symptoms. - Dr Smily

- 2023-02-13Hi mummies! Im currently 31 weeks pregnant. Last night i experienced sharp pain n pressure around my uterus (lower abdomen) and lower back, walking/lifting my legs made it worst. It lasted about 20 mins, and i woke up with the bottom half of my body feeling sore and tired. Could it be braxton hicks or real contractions? Anyone experienced this before? I am really worried n i dont think real contraction at this week is ideal 😭
- 2023-02-13Hi all, I’m currently in my first trimester (around week 6)..experienced bleeding with clots and went to KKH urgent O&G yesterday..doc said mine is a threatened miscarriage and prescribed progesterone over 2 weeks..they did scanning and could see baby and heartbeat..did not have any bleeding for the next 24 hours until now (the next day) where I felt a gush of blood again (fresh blood with clots)..just wondering if this is normal even after taking progesterone? How long does it usually take for the bleeding to stop? Am very worried and paranoid :(
- 2023-02-13Hi mommies! Just wondering is it a must to take A1/ B1 ward? I took up a private gynae at KKH. Which because i want only the only female doc attended to me. Some of my friends say i cannot opt for B2 ward because i took private. Is it true? I don’t mine B2 or C ward actually 🤭

- 2023-02-13Week 17 and i feel my tummy smaller and softer compared to previous weeks and still no baby movements felt yet. Feeling slightly anxious..
- 2023-02-13Hi mummies. Can I check if it’s ok if we do not want to do any of the above tests. As anyone not done them? My gynae shared if we are not going to do anything about the pregnancy, then we can choose not to do it. Some advise here please.
- 2023-02-13My baby sleeps about 9-12 hours in total on average per day. She’s 8.5 months old, has 2 bottom teeth and just learnt to sleep through the night (6-8 hours) in her 7th month.
Her bedtime is usually around 11pm-1am, and we are trying to push it earlier to around 9 or 10pm. Feel bad cause I know babies are supposed to sleep around 7-8pm. Our lifestyles are to blame as I usually work till 8 or 9pm and we hired a helper to take care of baby. It’s around night time that we all reach home and baby gets excited to see us and the house gets noisier at night as compared to daytime when it’s just her and the helper.
On “good” days she sleeps from 11pm to 7am, but as we’re pushing for earlier bedtime now, she recently sleeps around 930pm, wakes around 4am, we soothe her back to sleep without feeding till 5am, and then she wakes up around 830am. But we still haven’t established a fixed schedule, sometimes we try to make her sleep from 930pm but she resists and doesn’t want to sleep till 1230am. She stays awake for 3-4 hours between naps and sometimes up to 5 hours before bedtime.
We feed her milk 4 times per day, 210ml per feed, 3.5 to 4 hours apart. And give solids like cereal, fish porridge, etc around 1pm and 7pm.
Googled that babies her age should sleep at least 12 hours per day and it’s worrying me cause she hasn’t hit the bare minimum for weeks.. recently she sleeps just 9-11 hours each day. But hubby thinks it’s fine cause she’s been progressing pretty fast compared to my niece; my baby can babble, pincer hold, clap hands, roll, sit up, cruise and stand without support for a few seconds. Not sure if that’s the basic for her age though. She weighs around 7.5kg. Should I bring her to PD, or just keep trying to fix a schedule?
Thanks in advance 🙏

- 2023-02-14I'm in week 6 based on LMP. Haven't seen the gynae as it's scheduled on week 8. Just had diarrhoea and saw abit of pink with discharge on toilet paper. Is this common? I'm worried
- 2023-02-14The situation is very delicate and personal so any couple going through this will not share with many friends or relatives, it will mostly be their close circle who will know about it. It is a terrible loss and a big blow to both the husband and wife who would have built many dream castles about their future kid, about them as first time parents. However, it is further painful for the mother as she is going through it both physically and emotionally while the husband only goes through the latter. Here are some physical and emotional needs which I felt, in my experience, is what any woman would want post miscarriage.
Physical needs:
A woman's body goes through a lot of pain and changes during any miscarriage and it differs from person to person. In some cases, it is an invasive procedure while in some cases it happens naturally similar to the menstrual cycle but with excessive bleeding, pain and cramps. There will be hormonal changes, loss of nutrients, loss of blood, weakness, cramps, abdominal pain, dehydration and loss of weight in few cases. A woman will need the following to cope up with this physical trauma:
1. Good dose of supplements in terms of vitamins and other essential elements which will be prescribed by most of the doctors to bring back her system to normal as it was before the miscarriage so that her body is prepared to try again and bear a foetus.
2. Lots of water to cope up with excessive bleeding and dehydration
3. Healthy and nutritious diet rich in proteins, vitamins to rejuvenate the body and replenish the lost nutrients
4. Change in lifestyle in case the reason behind the miscarriage is due to overweight, hormonal imbalance, smoking/drinking, less daily activity or over intake of junk food.
5. Physical exercises after getting consent from the doctor when to start and what to do
Emotional needs:
It is a big disappointment not only for the woman but for everyone in the family including the husband, woman's parents and in laws. But the woman is not to be blamed as there is no 100% probability for a successful gestation. There are lot of natural factors in our body controlling it and it is just a trial and error like scenario to for a successful fertilization to happen and eventually a successful implantation of the foetus. In some cases (like mine) where the medical reason behind the multiple miscarriage is unknown. All the test results are good, couple is healthy following all precautions/doctor's advise but destined to go through this. Here are some emotional needs a woman needs, in my experience, to cope up with the unexpected loss:
1. Care, affection, support, help and what not from husband. A husband's situation is more difficult in this case as he is going through the same emotional distress as the wife and may not even have an opportunity to share what he is experiencing. However, a woman needs an extremely supportive husband to take care of her as she is physically and emotionally weak during this time.
2. Support from the family (parents and/or in-laws)by understanding her pain, speaking soothing words and most importantly assure her that she is not to blame and it is not really the end.
3. Medical advise/guidance from the gynaecologist by being transparent about the scenario, procedures to be done to handle the situation, medications to be taken and by providing clear detailed explanation as every woman is different and every miscarriage is different. My doctor clearly explained to me how the next 24-48 hours will be and what will be her next course of action based on the test results.
4. Comforting and motivational words from the gynaecologist as he/she is the first to tell us what has happened and he/she is the first person who a woman faces after hearing about the miscarriage (at times alone and not even with husband/family member). When my doctor confirmed the miscarriage, my husband was waiting outside and I burst into tears. It was my gynaecologist who comforted me first and told me this is not the end.
So I wish all the mothers-to-be to stay healthy, follow doctor's advise and get support from husband/family to get rejuvenated and try again to be successful this time.

- 2023-02-16First trimester is one of the most crucial stages of pregnancy as this is when the baby implants well in the uterus and baby's fetal pole develops with heart beat along with other organs. Yolk gradually takes shape of a beautiful baby. The gynae might call you for a scan regularly to monitor heartbeat, development of the baby. The mother is supposed to take extreme care on the diet and wellbeing by taking adequate rest. Mothers will face either one or many or all of these including morning sickness, aversion to certain food items which would have been your favourites too, nausea, dislike towards certain smell, craving for some delicious food. Here is my journey through the first trimester.
I tested my pregnancy using the Clear blue home pregnancy kit starting of week 5 and this time I waited till week 7 to visit the gynae at the same time I was watching out for spotting or any alarming signs so I can go the doctor immediately in that case. When I went to the clinic at week 7, as per their usual procedure they repeated the pregnancy test, I was waiting curiously and positively to see the double red line. Since I had an earlier experience of the faded line in the clinic during my ectopic pregnancy, this time I was hoping everything should go well. I was overjoyed to see the dark red line appear and the midwife happily asked me whether I was 6 weeks already. Later, my doctor called me in and straightway went for the abdominal ultrasound with doppler and showed me the fetal pole and I heard the heart beat too. She said the foetus is positioned well in the uterus. Due to covid restrictions that time, my husband was waiting outside the clinic so he didn't hear the heart beat that day. After the scan, the doctor gave iron and folic acid supplement and advised to stay active, not lift heavy weights, eat healthy diet (avoiding papaya, pineapple) and stay positive. That's when she asked me whether my husband was waiting outside and I said yes. She said we would have asked him to come inside to hear the heart beat. After coming out, I remember I was imitating to him how the heart beat sounded through the Doppler. He was slightly sad that he couldn't hear it this time but was happy that pregnancy is progressing well.
Since I had two miscarriages earlier, she wanted me to come the next week to see if the development is as expected. This time informed the midwives and the doctor first itself that my husband is waiting outside so that they would call him to hear the heartbeat. My husband was so happy at the same time clarified his doubts with the doctor on what I can do, what I can eat etc.
I used to do all the household work except lifting heavy weights. I used to bend down, do cooking, offer prayers to God and in fact we used to travel by public transport to visit gynae. I used to walk everyday with my husband. My husband was always with me thanks to the work from home opportunity during those covid times. He has accompanied me since day 1 of visiting the gynae till delivery. He was my pillar of support and strength. I had craving to eat waffles. I started to hate few dishes I extremely loved to eat before my pregnancy. I didn't have vomiting although I had nausea. Since I was cooking at home, i made only those dishes that I liked to eat in a way that I liked. Mainly, I avoided sweets, white sugar. I took all the supplements prescribed by the doctor correctly. I ate lot of nuts, dry fruits and fruits.
My best wishes to all the mothers to travel smoothly through the first trimester. Be careful, stay bold and strong, be happy and cheerful throughout as your emotions reflect on the baby.

- 2023-02-16To working mums with a young baby/babies, how do you balance work and family? I feel like my priority has largely shifted from work to my young baby. I feel bad because I'm not able to give more attention to work right now and it is unfair to my employer. But ever since I have a baby, I realised that work isn't everything. I want to be financially independent but family is just as important to me if not more. Any mummies can share your experiences and struggles?

- 2023-02-16After applying for at least 8 preschool around my area Bukit Batok and waiting for many months through ECDA, all I got was my child in the wait list and the waiting time is 1 year, my lo is almost 2 years old and going to be 3 years when it’s our turn. I feel that preschool in sg is extremely terribly managed by the government and EDCA being the most useless service of registering interest. I saw the news on $840 million being invested in preschool education but nothing has changed. It makes you wonder where all the investment has gone. Hiring people to reply email to say they are on wait lists? It’s such a dumb system in my opinion.

- 2023-02-16Hi daddies, I’m a mummy seeking for daddy’s (mummies welcomed) POV.
So this has been on my mind for the longest time ever. I am the main caregiver for my 13mo and honestly, even before pregnancy, my temper is never good. While I tried my best to keep my cool, my LO has 101 ways to trigger me, so sometimes I lose my cool. To my husband, it’s like because I’m a mom, I no longer have the rights to lose my temper? I face my LO 24/7 and I certainly cannot talk to my husband like normal couples do. He’s either not listening or he will always think I’m the wrong one. He always talks to me/his family like he’s always in a bad mood or annoyed but when he talks to other people (regardless of gender), like strike lottery.
There was once he said, if you’re so unhappy about being a SAHM with her (LO), then you go out and work, I can stay at home instead. But make sure you earn $xxx amount (he’s not even drawing this amount btw). I don’t demand him to earn a certain amount nor do I ask him to give me monthly allowance. If I have the money, I will pay for some stuffs or bills. I eat once a day and I don’t go for branded. I can survive on maggi daily no problem. I breastfeed my baby so we can save formula money, i scrimp and save over that few cents. I do all the laundry without complains. But end of the day, why am I supposed to earn a certain amount the roles are reversed? Why is it that I cannot have my own emotions just because I am a mum? Am I not human?
Is this marriage dying? Sometimes I’m really very sick and tired of this rs. We just passed 3 years of marriage but just gotten our bto. I don’t want to lose my dogs and baby that’s why I’m swallowing the thoughts.

- 2023-02-17Can I bring my LO (couple month olds) to visit another newborn of my friend (2 weeks old)
- 2023-02-17Second trimester is a considered to be a chill period in most pregnancies as the baby would have gained good shape, baby's organs would have developed, morning sickness will start to fade away so mothers can eat well whatever they like. It is better to do nursery planning and shopping during this time as third trimester will be fast and busy with glucose test, vaccines for whooping cough, flu and so on. Most importantly, visit your dentist and get a thorough scan/cleaning or any treatment if needed during second trimester, remember to inform your dentist you are pregnant so he/she will take extra care while performing the procedure. Because dental problems are highly possible due to low calcium deficiency during pregnancy. Here is my journey through second trimester.
I visited my gynae every 3-4 weeks and she asked to take a detailed ultrasound scan with Doppler, around week 20-22. This was a memorable experience for us as the sonologist showed baby's eyes, ears, hands, fingers, legs, toes, baby's head, heart, tummy. The sonologist also checked whether the heart beat is normal, blood flow through heart chambers is normal, blood pressure through placenta is normal. I even remember my baby was so active when we went for the scan that the sonologist had to wait for a while for baby to settle down to capture the pictures. Baby also showed thumbs up like action. We could also see her opening her mouth and taking in drops of fluid, probably was hungry. I had slightly out of the range blood pressure for which my gynae prescribed aspirin to regulate the blood pressure and to prevent chances of preeclampsia.
I also planned and listed what to buy - nursery things like crib, mattress, crib fitted sheets, crib organiser, bath tub; hospital bag things like disposable panties, cool pads, postpartum pads, feeding wear, breast pump, bidet bottle, breast pads; postpartum stuff like maternity belts, feeding bras, feeding gowns, pyjamas, traditional herbal confinement medicines/concoctions, nipple cream ; baby essentials like diapers, wipes, disposable changing sheets, dry sheets, towels, wash cloths, bibs, feeding bottles, teats, cleaning brush, drying rack, vegetable cleanser, baby laundry detergent, onesies, rompers, swaddles, sleep sacks, head to toe body wash, lotion, diaper balm, massage oil, etc so that it will be easier for me to order/buy later. I listed in detail what to buy, which brand, from where to buy(online/shop), which seller/shop to buy from; this truly helped me in third trimester as I straightaway could order or buy whatever I listed without breaking my head. We also visited baby shops like Mummy's market, Baby Kingdom, Mothercare, Baby's Hyperstore to see what are the baby needs to buy, price range, offers etc. We didn't buy anything but just visited the shops to get an idea. There was no baby expo that time due to covid restrictions.
We also did a rough study on the hospitals my gynae was affiliated to and compared the features, packages, cost of stay, distance from our place of stay etc so that we could decide on the hospital later.
My morning sickness was getting much better during the middle of second trimester and I got cravings. I used to feel hungry and munch on healthy food and snacks to the best extent. I wanted to keep a check on sugar intake/sweets to keep gestational diabetes at bay. I thought that's one of the many things I can do to protect my kid. I borrowed books from library to keep my mind relaxed during free time. Since I did the cooking, managed easy household chores and working out the above mentioned shopping list/checklists I had very little time to read those books. I used to take a nap either before or after my lunch for 30-45 mins max. My husband and I got to spend a lot of personal time together by watching web series, going out to visit baby shops, have dinner outside after our routine checkup. He would keep checking on me what I ate, what I am doing, how I am feeling regularly because he worked from home. I kept myself active, continued to go for walk with my husband daily in the night and do exercises everyday as suggested by my doctor. I ensured I didn't strain myself physically or get drained out while keeping myself active.
My best wishes to all the mothers-to-be to stay chill and relaxed at the same time be careful and cautious during this time, to have a happy smooth pregnancy journey.
- 2023-02-17Hi mummies, I recently went for my week 20 detailed scan and my bb is found to have a choroid plexus cyst. My gynae mentioned that it used to be seen as a marker for Down syndrome but now they don’t believe so. Has anyone’s bb had this during their scan and is now normal and healthy??

Here are some questions asked in our community, and we got the answers for you ✅
👩💼My husband is very nice man and we didn’t have premarital sex during our 3 years of dating . Now that we are married , I realise he does not have much experience in bed and reflects a big contrast oppose to mine to the extend I do not enjoy the deed anymore like how I used. Now I feels like a task instead as we are trying to conceive, we do not do it leisurely but we do it when I am ovulating and to be honest it’s not a good feeling. I wonder if this is normal or has anyone experiencing the same situation ? How should I hint him to get more involve in making love during our daily lives
👩🔬sexual intimacy is crucial for couples and i think open communication about your sexual needs and his sexual activity with you is not very pleasant. He doesnt know what he dont know. I would also want to maybe give him some suggestion on how to satisfy your sexual needs because he may or may not have an exposure to sex knowledge.
👩💼I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and my relationship with my hubby hasn’t been going well. I get easily irritated and I feel really bad about it. It’s causing our relationship to turn sour. Any mom-to-be going through the same thing? Will things get better? #firstbaby #firsttimemom
👩🔬As a mom as well as a therapist, i think its quite normal to feel like a roller coaster during our pregnancy due to the hormonal changes in the body. But, it will always be better for you to check with your gynae on this so she can also assists you if any supplement is needed to better improve your emotional health. In my experience, yes it will get better as both parents get adjusted to this new parent role.
👩💼 My friend's husband is constantly shouting at her. Her husband can just shout at her inside crowded places. She is getting angry too. lastly, both of them end up in either fight or an argument. How can she have a peaceful family life?
👩🔬Hi, i think your friend need to reach out for professional help. When argument that ends up so escalated, there are usually root cause to an escalated argument and what causes them to have anger outburst so publicly. As a couple therapist, we usually look for patterns in their communication that doesnt work to identify what causing the stress in their relationship. Hence i would suggest for them to look for a professional couple therapist who is able to help their relationship.

- 2023-02-17Hi mummies,
This is my first time bf my baby. My baby latches for like 30-45 mins each side during feeding ( cause she keeps falling asleep till I rub her ears then she will start drinking again). I feel very exhausted cause of this as she feeding lasted for about 45min but in 2 hour time she’s hungry again. I consulted the lactation counsellor at kkh and they advice to pump out excess milk after each latching session so that can measure her intake. I bought a pump from shoppee but my nipples hurt after 10 mins of pumping. Any experience bf mums can help? I’m so clueless. Baby is going 2 months old and I’ve survived so far with 2-4 hours of sleep daily.

I’m 7wks 5days today and I have not been eating well for the past few days. This symptom was the complete opposite as to when I had my first pregnancy (which unfortunately ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks).
Please help! Really need a way to counter this as I get hungry all the time but just no desire to eat to give the best nutrients for my baby.
Still eating my pre-natal vitamins and dates daily just to survive the bare minimum.

- 2023-02-18I was only aware that I'm pregnant nearing the end of the first trimester, so I hadn't taken any vitamins and supplements for the pregnancy such as folic acid. I was also doing house chores that involved using multiple chemicals like toilet cleaner, bleach, etc. I'm worried that there might be developmental issues. Any mummies went through pregnancy without taking the necessary vitamins & supplements and did work/chores that could have been detrimental, but the baby turned out well and normal? #pleasehelp #advicepls #firsttrimester
