I think the best way to prepare your toddler for the new sibling is to involve her in the preparation of the coming bud. I'm the 3rd in a row of 4 sweet peas and my mom said that she can remember letting me know that I'm going to be a sister when I was 5y/o soonest they know our youngest is coming. She had to let me touch and kiss her tummy and sing along songs and also prepare baby clothes that are my first hand-me-downs to my sis. Surprisingly, I still have a that good memory of the night when my father was carrying our littlest sister and we were all delighted to see her. More so, some guides from here could help you: http://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/prepare-children
What I did to prepare new baby arrival include: - Read story books on Big Brother/Big Sister to let elder kid know what to expect when baby is here - Buy presents for exchange between new baby and siblings - Get a baby doll and pretend play how to take care of the new baby - Bring elder siblings together for prenatal visits - Bonding through belly e.g. singing, applying stretchmark lotions You can get more tips from here: http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/sibling-prep.html#
The best way is make the older kid contribute. Bring him when you meet the doctor, show him the sonogram, etc. Also ask him to communicate more with baby in the belly, make them friend before the baby even born. Don't forget to prep him become the eldest by giving more responsibillity such as, learn how to eat by himself, or to put the toys back in the box after play.
My sister always wanted a lot of kids so when they were planning their second, they often asked the eldest if she wanted a baby brother or sister. When she was pregnant already, they told the eldest that a baby sister was inside mummy's tummy and together they read books and sang to her :)

It's also important to show your older one that he/ she still has your attention and love so while you're buying new stuff for the baby, you might want to buy a toy or two for the elder one as well
