I don't know about day care centers at large but the centre where my kid was going, the care takers used to pat them to sleep. They had little cots on which they would pat them to sleep. Initially when my kid took time to adjust, caretaker would hold him in her arms and would walk to and fro the room till the time he would go to sleep. The caretakers in such centres are trained professionals and they know how to soothe babies.

IFC teacher to student ratio is smaller thus baby can get more attention. In IFC, teacher will accomodate your needs. E.g. if your baby is able to fall asleep himself, teacher will just place him in the baby cot when baby is sleepy. If your baby needed to be patted to fall asleep, you can request teacher to do the same.
Most infant caretakers pat the kids to sleep. They do not cuddle them and pat them. They will place them either in a rocker or their cots to pat them to sleep. After a period of them, they will train the kids to self soothe to sleep.
New babies usually need some patting for them to sleep. Babies below 1 will sleep in Cot. Babies above 1 will sleep on matteress on the floor Most of them will self soothe themselves
From what i see, some childcare will use rocker to rock the baby and pat them to sleep. If those don't need will sleep at the cot themselves.
When I visited saw that the babies were all soundly asleep in the cots by themselves
That's good training right. My Lo will fuss and refused to sleep if not carried
