I've digestive issues, and I was told my "Shi qi" is heavy n bad. What can I do?
You have to first determine whether your dampness,湿气,belongs to the heat dampness type,湿热型 or the cold dampness type,寒湿型. For heat dampness individuals, they tend to red/flushed face complexion and their stool will tend to be sticky or hard, and bad smelling. For cold dampness individuals, they tend to have a pale face complexion and their stool will tend to be soft or even watery. Do note that it is possible that it may be just a slight deviation to either type, so the symptoms may not be very typical like those mentioned above. In general, people who dampness should try avoid fried food and beer, which is very potent in creating dampness. For heat dampness individuals, you may want to try drinking barley drink regularly. For cold dampness individuals, you may want to try to orange peel and Poria tea, 陈皮茯苓茶, regularly. Considering that your dampness is quite bad, and digestive problem can present itself in different ways which will affect treatment method, I would recommend th
Can TCM be helpful to lose weight? Especially for a new mum.
Yes, especially after pregnancy, whereby the body has experienced a major change in its body constitution. Mothers tend to have a deficiency in Qi and blood, along with excessive dampness, after giving birth. These may or may not recover over time depending on many factors such as the confinement process and body recovery ability. Thus, some mothers may end up gaining some weight, which we believe is due to the excess dampness in the body. TCM, in this case, can help by nurturing the mother’s body back to health which will help get rid of the excess dampness, in turn losing weight. However, mothers need to play a part as well if they wish to lose weight more efficiently. They need to be more active and also do some postpartum exercises to help the correct their body posture. This postpartum period is a good time for mothers to adjust their body condition. So if situation permits, do seek advice from a TCM physician on the possible treatment plan.

From TCM perspective, what is the safest and best exercises for pregnant ladies ?
In accordance to TCM principle of syndrome differentiated treatment, 辨证论治, the safest and best exercise would be one tailored for the individual. Which is basically about doing exercise that is suitable for your current body status. So other than seeking professional help to tailor a exercise plan for you, you can also listen to your own body and work within your ability. For example, if your body is weak, do start with gentle exercise before moving to more strenuous ones. One of the safer and better exercise, pregnant ladies, or anyone, can do is actually walking. Walking is one of the basis form of locomotion of the human body and is one of the first few abilities we develop as a baby. Therefore, the strain it places on our body is minimum, while involving the whole body, allowing the Qi and blood flow through the body better. However, depending on your needs and goals, walking alone may not be enough. This is when you should approach a TCM physician for more advice.
I heard pregnant lady cannot drink herbal soup (十全大补汤). Is that true? I mistakenly drink it today, thought it is normal nourish soup that good for health. What should i do?
十全大补汤 in itself is safe and a commonly drank soup. The problem regarding its usage only comes about when used on people with unsuitable body condition. In the case of pregnant ladies, we would usually not recommend taking something too nourishing as most of them would not actually need it, or are already taking other supplements as well. If you have taken it, don’t worry. However, in future, do seek advice of a TCM physician to see if the tonic soup is suitable for your body condition first, especially during pregnancy.
We were often told to avoid Chinese herbs during pregnancy, when would be a good time to see TCM? During or after pregnancy?
When you should actually visit TCM, will probably depend on the purpose of the visit. Coming to us before pregnancy, will allow us to adjust your body condition and help your body prepare for pregnancy. Whereas during pregnancy, due to much consideration of the baby, we would typically keep the medication to the minimum needed, and usually only focus on helping with the smooth progression of the pregnancy. As for after pregnancy, that is usually when we would recommend ladies to see TCM to help nurture their bodies back to health or to seek treatment for other body conditions/ailment.
