Hi, Do not worry as each baby takes his or her time to reach their developmental milestones. Boys generally take more time to speak as compared to girls. I suggest, whoever spends most of the time with baby must talk to him so that he becomes familiar with words that are spoken over and over again in front of him. This way he will soon pick up words. Initially, kids blabber but they soon start picking words on their own. Your son is just 16-month-old and when he has already started saying maa, means that he has no problem speaking words, just that he is taking his own time. So, do not worry too much and talk to him and show him things when you are addressing to a thing so that he understands what you are referring to. Like if you pick up a doll, then hold the doll and say it showing him. Soon, he will understand that this particular thing is called doll and when he would want it, he will speak it too.

Don't worry...its natural for babies to take their own time to reach various milestones and it's the same with speaking. At 16 months it's not too late. U can try the following tips: 1. Talk to your baby as much as you can. Talk about everything as you go about your day. 2. Each time your baby makes a sound make sure to respond and answer and pay attention. It's ur baby's of speaking and the more you encourage the more it will make your baby try to speak. 3. Point out objects and name them out loud. For instance, if there's a bird, point it out to your baby and say bird. Repeat it many times. 4. Get board books with big images and do the same. Give it time and keep talking.. soon ul see the difference :)
