Most of my friends prefer the upright and the cradle positions for bottle feeding. The upright position best mimic the breastfeeding position and also help control the flow of the milk from the bottle. They usually sit their baby on their laps and have the head rest on their chests or the crook of their arms. For the cradle position, they advise to check that the baby’s head is always higher than the rest of the body. These positions also offer good skin-to-skin contact which help to comfort the baby. Here a good article on the position for bottle feeding a baby: http://www.parents.com/baby/care/american-baby-how-tos/how-to-bottlefeed-baby/

I actually direct latch my baby lying down and when she was smaller, I used the cradle position so I'm not sure if the upright position mimics the nursing position best. I do sit my baby upright if I'm bottle feeding her so the air can rise up and she won't get choked as opposed to drinking in a lying down position. It's best to sit your baby in an upright position when bottle feeding or at a slanted position. Babies do get choked by the milk flow when taking in their milk lying down. However, now that my dad is looking after my girl, he realised that she prefers drinking her milk lying down.

for my babies i always made them lie down on a pillow and tilt their heads up a little. this ensured that they would not choke while drinking from a bottle, even if they accidentally fell asleep.

When I bottled feed my first son, I always did the cradle position. Did not try anything else as I was afraid he may choke.
