I actually direct latch my baby lying down and when she was smaller, I used the cradle position so I'm not sure if the upright position mimics the nursing position best. I do sit my baby upright if I'm bottle feeding her so the air can rise up and she won't get choked as opposed to drinking in a lying down position. It's best to sit your baby in an upright position when bottle feeding or at a slanted position. Babies do get choked by the milk flow when taking in their milk lying down. However, now that my dad is looking after my girl, he realised that she prefers drinking her milk lying down.
