I chose a colour my husband and I really liked and featured that around our home in various forms. I also wanted a few pieces that symbolise my Sri Lankan heritage Apart from that, I added pieces that are of neutral colours so there won't be too many colour clashes.
It depends on the culture you follow as well. Some people tend to go with the their own culture decor examples like Indian, mexican etc. But the best way is to be minimalistic and Hip.
