It might seem like a terrible thing to do, you may need to wake up your newborn for feed if he is sleeping for more than four hours. This is because: 1. Most newborns lose weight in the first few days after birth and it is important for him to feed frequently till he does not regain that weight and reach his next milestone weight -- especially if he is sleeping more than four hours at a stretch. 2. Crying is a late sign of hunger. The baby may actually sleep through his hunger and you may miss signs like him sucking his fists or smacking his lips. If he sleeps through his feed time, it could lead to crying. 3. Frequent feedings can increase breastmilk supply.

You generally do not have to wake babies for feeds, because most will wake on their own. If you notice that baby is sleeping for longer stretches during the day, then you can wake them up in the day, so they don't get night and day mixed up. Most experts do not recommend waking babies for night time feedings, because you want them to sleep. If they are sleeping more in the day than the night, they suggest waking them so they don't go more than 4 hours without eating. When my baby is still a newborn, he wakes up on the dot every 4 hours then slowly as he gets older, he drinks every 2 hours as I am feeding on demand.

Baby need to feed every 2-3hrs till 1month old. So wake the baby and feed if age less than a month. After that you should let the baby sleep longer without waking up atleast in night time. Its their way of adjusting to circadian clock. By 3rd month baby would even sleep up to 6hrs straight in night which is totally fine. They would feed more often in morning to compensate that.

Usually doctors saying that a mother should breast feed the baby until 6 months old. It should be between 2-3 hours. It's your decision to wake him up or not. But try to feed the baby well before the baby goes to sleep. 😃

I suggest to feed the baby on demand. However you may want to monitor if your newborn has jaundice as it sometimes makes babies sleepy, so they nurse less enthusiastically.

He's just trying to adjust to life outside the womb, he will change the pattern as time goes by. There's no need to wake him up for feeds
