My 4 year old likes to grind his teeth when he sleeps. Any adverse effects? How to stop it?

Teeth grinding is actually quite common in kids, and is medically called Bruxism. In this condition, kids either grind their teeth or clench their jaw when they’re asleep, especially during deep sleep phases or if they are under stress. Even though these are possibilities, there isn’t a specific reason for why kids grind their teeth. It could be because their teeth are not properly aligned. Or, they are reacting to some kind of pain in their body, or they are stressed, angry or tensed. In most cases, there are no side effects to Bruxism. However, in some cases kids do experience headaches, pain in jaw, and increased tooth sensitivity as they tend to grind down their enamel. While most kids outgrow bruxism, some who do not, can be helped with a warm bath before bedtime, and by making sure they are not stressed before they hit the bed.

Teeth grinding is known as bruxism. The exact cause is not known, but tension, pain, anxiety, misalignment of teeth and pinworms are some purported causes. 38% of children have bruxism. There isn't any huge cause for concern, but it will be good to mention it at his next visit to the dentist. http://www.babycenter.com/0_teeth-grinding-bruxism_1524446.bc

If its really severe it can cause wearing down of teeth. According to https://aasm.org/children-who-grind-their-teeth-are-more-likely-to-have-problems-in-school-be-withdrawn-from-others/ it might be because he is stressed or maybe dreams are causing him to become anxious. It would help to visit a paediatrician and discuss his behaviour.

Yes, as others have rightly mentioned, it's quite common in kids. My mum used to tell me it's because of hyperactive brain or worms in the tummy! Not sure if this is true, but no harm feeding him a de-wormer once :)

Try reading a best time story or even talk about your child's fantasies. A good pleasant sleep will slowly reduce the grinding.. also do calm the child by patting during the grind if possible...

I think it’s pretty common, especially if they are under some sort of stress. Try to ease your 4 years old’s mood before you sleep

Ganyan din anak ko. Nakaka worried po. 4 years old. 😔
