Hello! Sorry if this sounds like a silly Q. I’m wondering can jaundice actually be avoided? I.e. what sort of food to be taken more or not to take during pregnancy? Thanks in advance!

Don't worry. It's not a silly question. Jaundice is very, very common. And most of the time it is unavoidable due to the physiology of the baby. When the baby was inside the womb, bilirubin (yellow pigment responsible for jaundice) is removed via the umbilical cord. However, when the baby is born, it has to be processed by the liver then removed. Most babies have immature liver hence bilirubin is not effectively removed from the body.Sometimes, some higher risk babies will require phototherapy to help bring the jaundice down. We must always remember that jaundice is normal and does not have any permanent side effects on a child if it is not high. There is no food that can help to reduce jaundice. The best way is still ensuring baby frequently breastfeeds.
