Although it seemed like a good type of insurance to have, we didn't take it up. Firstly because it was not a cure for diseases as we initially thought it was. Secondly the amount of cord blood stored could only be used once. Also there are not a lot of instances where the cord blood can be used. Research and application in this aspect are still fairly shallow. Hence given the benefits and range of coverage and applications, my hubby and I felt that the premium quoted is not worth it. Although CDA account can be used for financing the storage, we felt it could be used for other purposes.
I donated my babies' cord blood to public cord blood banking http://www.scbb.com.sg/Pages/Home.aspx. The main reason is due to we don't have any family history of critical illness and we wish to help more people who need it. If you wish to donate too, you can call up SCBB to make an appointment. http://www.scbb.com.sg/DONATE/HOWTODONATE/Pages/Home.aspx There are some private cord blood banking in Singapore for you to store your baby's cord blood: 1. Cordlife - https://www.cordlife.com/sg/ 2. Stemcord - http://www.stemcord.com/
I didnt. The chance of your family using it is so minute to waste that kind of money. Doctors here estimate that the chance of families retrieving their privately banked cord blood for treatment is between one in 2,500 (0.04 per cent) and one in 20,000 (0.0005 per cent).
I didn't as I had a previous medical issue which did not let me donate my child's cord blood. I didn't sign up for private cord blood banking either as there are only very few instances where the cord blood can be used and it's not worth paying the money.
