Signs of constipation in infants include: - Stools that are hard and dry or have blood in them - Baby showing persistent discomfort when moving her bowels Constipation is rare in infants who are exclusively breastfed. You can consult your doctor if you are worried. If she is showing other symptoms such as vomiting or a swollen tummy, it could then indicate a more serious condition and should seek medical attention. Other potential causes of constipation could be introduction of rice cereal as a start to solid food (the cereal is low in fiber) or dehydration. Here are some simple suggestions you can try to help ease constipation: - If low fiber content could be the cause, you can include pureed fruits (pears or prunes) or vegetables to supplement the cereal - Giving your baby more fluid (add pear or prune juice to her milk if you have started your baby on solids) - Wiggle your baby's legs in a gentle pedaling motion while he/she is lying on his/her back. - Gently but firmly massage your baby’s belly (below the navel). If you feel a firm area, keep a steady pressure there for a few moments. For more information on constipation: http://www.babycenter.com/6_your-5-month-old-week-2_1495727.bc#articlesection3
Has your baby recently started on formula or solids? What are the symptoms your baby is experiencing? Of course remedies for constipation in babies would greatly depend on their age. But these three remedies can be used for babies as small as even 6 months. Tummy Massage – Gently massage and rub baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction. Place your hands at baby’s navel and massage in a circular motion, moving your hand(s) out and away from the center of baby’s belly. Bicycle Legs – Place your baby on her back and lightly hold her legs in a half-bent position. Gently begin to move your baby’s legs as if she is riding a bicycle. Alternate “Bicycle Legs” with Tummy Massage. *”Bicycle Legs” also may help to relieve a baby who is gassy. A Warm Bath – Some medical professionals suggest giving your constipated baby a warm bath. The thought is that this may help relax baby and “get things moving” again. Give a tummy massage as you are drying baby.
A change in formula or in Mom's diet could help combat constipation in formula and breastfed babies, respectively. Solid foods, which are often the cause of constipation, can also be the cure, Several kinds of fruits and veggies, such as pears and broccoli, can get things back on track, along with fruit juice and water. When a change in diet isn't doing the trick, talk to your pediatrician before employing other methods. The doctor might suggest rectal stimulation with the use of a cotton swab or rectal thermometer. This usually produces a bowel movement within several minutes of stimulation, Another possible is a glycerin suppository. If it works, it could take about an hour to produce a poop, Other suggestions may include Miralax, a tasteless powder you can mix into a drink; senna, a natural vegetable laxative; and lactulose, a synthetic sugar used for treating constipation.
Here are some things to try: If you feed your baby formula, ask her doctor about switching to a different brand. Sometimes adding dark corn syrup to the formula also does the trick: Start with 1/4 teaspoon per 4 ounces of formula. If that doesn't help, gradually increase the amount. Don't give her more than 1 teaspoon per 4 ounces. Add a little prune juice to formula or breast milk if your baby is at least 4 weeks old. Normally, it isn't necessary to give your baby juice, but a little is okay to help relieve constipation. (Try apple or pear juice if your baby doesn't like the taste of prunes.) Give her an ounce a day for each month of life, up to 4 ounces for a 4-month-old. After 8 months, your baby can have as much as 6 ounces of juice a day to treat constipation.
I gave my baby (16mo) yogurt to help his digestation. Also it is important that your baby eats enough fiber. You can have it from fruit like Dragon Fruit or papaya. Don't give your baby banana during constipation, banana contains kalium and it make poop become harder.
