Take away their privileges -- that's a common method here in Sweden because corporal punishment for children is against the law. Embed the idea that their leisure activities/toys are privileges that can and will be taken away if they misbehave. From what I observe, it does work to a certain extent, especially for older kids who are pretty much obsessed with their toys and gadgets. As for younger kids, give them a time-out and tell them that they won't get treats (their favourite snack perhaps?) if they continue to misbehave.
Time-In instead of Time-out. When a child is misbehaving, you can give her time-in e.g. a special corner for her to calm down during the melt-down. After she has cooled down, you can offer her a hug and talk about the incident just now. With this kids are more receptive and ready to listen to you instead of shutting off when you are scolding or punishing them.
Physical punishment is the worst way to discipline children. make them to clean dishes or cooked breakfast for a week as punishment. Do something that build their responsibility from a very young age. Beat children as punishment will not fix anything, it will only make them grow as an abusive adult.
