How do I encourage my daughter to use cloth pads in school?

Thank you mummies for all the wonderful suggestions. My main aim for letting my daughter try cloth pad is that I want to give her a better option to manage her menses than those chemical loaded pads. I also know for a fact that these cloth pads help a lot with regulating flow, making it more comfortable and breathable. I know that it will not be the most convinient option, specialy for a young girl..but isnt it the same that the way you change the disposable you also change the reusable cloth pad. I make them myself so I can always make it in the size and absorbency that will suit her and will be more leakproof than the disposable ones. The reason I asked it her was to know if any other mom has also helped her daughter to use them in school.

You are a caring mother. Makes me see another it at another angle too. If you want probably cn get her get used to using it at home first and slowly see what she prefers best. And since you make nice pads, maybe you can make cute and secured storage (that seals odour) for her to bring home from sch :)

It's nice that you want to adopt eco-friendly practices from young. Considering your girl is the one who will be using the cloth pads, it's important that she knows (1) how to use them, (2) proper storage after changing, to prevent odours (I put my used one in a square Daiso box, and then into a small wet bag which I hang onto my bag with a carabiner--So that I remember to wash it when I get home) Menses can be a stressful event, so you'd want to ensure that she is first, confident to use them at home, before she uses them in school. All the best!

Thank you dear 💖

I think it's best to let your daughter to decide, see which is more comfortable bcz it will affect how she deals her day with mensus. If she's not comfortable, she probably will have difficult time dealing with pms. Pms and trying to be comfortable is not cool. And the constant worry that it might leak in public, in school especially, wont help at all.

Hi dear, Thank you dear, just trying my best to also give our kids better options at managing their cycles, together with good food and education.. They will only use and get used to good things if we as parents give them that option.. May I know why do you want your daughter to use cloth pad? I thk it is more hygienic to use disposable one. Especially she stay long hours in school, it is very inconvenient when she needs to change it. Like she needs to keep the used cloth pad in bag until finish school to bring home and clean? It will have some odour too.

As a matter of fact, cloth pads are more hygienic and comfortable that the disposable ones. When you wash and dry the cloth pads properly, they are more clean than the disposables, atleast you know whats in the cloth pads, we have no idea how the disposables are made and whats in there either.. Yes she will have to store them in a wet bag and bring it back home to wash, its just like cloth daipers, when we are out we change and put the used one in a wet bag to be washed at home.

I think being a teen and going through puberty is tough enough without having to change and wash cloth pads in school. I think you should let her use normal pads first and let her get used to having periods first and getting her to be comfortable with having period every month before forcing her to use cloth pads.

Oh yes definitely not forcing her, but i just want to give her a head start in managing her menses more sustainably..

Maybe try to get her to use cloth ones at home first? Even with disposable pads I am always afraid of spill / stain on clothing when outside home... as teenager, the shame / fear will be even harder to overcome. Imagine the teasing she will get from school mates.

It's more convenient and hygienic to use disposable pads. Who would want to and have time to wash and reuse a pad. Especially school kids/teenagers. Besides, you need to change at least every 4hrs.

There is a factor of inconvinience, agreed, but these can be washed in machines just like normal laundry. All we need to do is rinse out the blood and toss it in... This is my concern, coz most of the girls will be using disposables and to encourage her to use reusable in such a situation may be tough...

Sorry.. Please enlighten me.. What's wrong with disposable pads? Why must use cloths pad? How will she rinse the cloth pad in school? Even at home I don't think it's necessary to use cloths pad.

There is everything wrong with the disposables. Firstly they are heavily bleached to make it look clean, loaded with toxic chemicals just so that they can absorb our menses faster and keep us dry. And then just end up in landfills to sit there for years. These mordern day cloth pads are nothing like the ones our moms or granny’s used. They are much more prettier and equally absorbent and leak proof like the disposable ones, without any added chemicals and toxins to it. They are much more comfortable as they are 100% cotton just like our panty and hence more breathable too...

Having menses already feel uncomfortable. Still use cloth pads?! Seriously. Wake up your idea. Pity your daughter.

Menses have become uncomfortable because of the disposables which are nothing but plastics sitting right next to our lady bits. You must try the cloth to actually know how comfortable your menses can be.. Here is a pic that I made recently

What are the cloth pads for?

I can make them leak proof, infact I find that cloth pads hold my flow better than the disposable ones and the disposable ones used to give me bad rashes too..
