During the early stages of tooth development, be especially gentle with your baby's teeth and gums. Use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush or finger brush and a light touch when cleaning your baby's new teeth. You only need to use water at this stage - no toothpaste necessary, unless recommended by your baby's dentist. Use the toothbrush to softly massage his gums even where there are no exposed teeth. This gets your baby used to the feeling of the toothbrush in his mouth and lets him learn that brushing is a pleasant experience, not something that should be frightening or irritating. Toothpaste should not be used on babies younger than the age of two, because babies cannot expectorate (spit it out). Fluoride is a good thing in the right amount at the right developmental stage, but not during infancy. Start your little one on fluoride-free infant and toddler toothpaste, such as My First Colgate, then when your dentist recommends switching to a fluoride toothpaste or when your child is around two years old. To be certain of the right time to switch your child over to fluoride toothpaste, discuss your child's fluoride and dental care needs with your dentist or pediatrician.

I use Kids Spry Tooth Gel, with Xylitol. It can be used for baby age 3 Months and up, all natural ingredients, safe to swallow and flouride-free. Xylitol has been proven to prevent tooth decay. My kids like the light taste too.  It is very important that this tooth gel does not contain Glycerin, which is an ingredient in most toothpaste and gels. Glycerin can interfere with strengthening your teeth, and it layers your tooth in a sticky film that keeps the minerals in your saliva from interacting with your enamel to strengthen it. You can purchase from Iherbs and enjoy free shipping when hits certain amount of order.  http://www.iherb.com/Xlear-Inc-Xclear-Kids-Spry-Tooth-Gel-with-Xylitol-Strawberry-Banana-2-0-fl-oz-60-ml/29022 When your baby is older, i.e. more than 2 years old, it is recommended that to use flouride based toothpaste. I recommend this brand from iherbstoohttp://www.iherb.com/Tom-s-of-Maine-Natural-Children-s-Fluoride-Toothpaste-Silly-Strawberry-4-2-oz-119-g/37147

i spoke to the dentist for my baby's first brushing experience and i was told that you can start using a toothpaste from the time your baby is over a year old. just make sure that the toothpaste does not contain any fluoride. also, initially you can help your baby just use the toothbrush and spit out the water, and then introduce the paste. in India, using the simple Colgate toothpaste that is white in colour is the best choice, even for babies.
