An allergen is a typically harmless substance that causes an allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is an allergic response to specific allergens. Some typical allergens are grass, dust, and mold. Pollen is the most common allergen. Your body releases histamine when it encounters an allergen. A histamine is a natural chemical that defends your body from the allergen. This chemical causes allergic rhinitis, which can have many uncomfortable symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Common causes of allergic rhinitis include: pollen dust animal dander (old skin) cat saliva mold Pollen is the biggest culprit, especially during certain times of the year. Tree and flower pollens are more prevalent in the spring, while grasses and weeds produce more pollen in the summer and fall months.

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, can be caused by an array of things as mentioned by Nooraini above. Since moving to Sweden, I'm much more aware of hay fever because it is pretty much a national affair each time Spring rolls by. I haven't been affected by it but as soon as the flowers start to sprout and the air gets warmer, so do the sales of hay fever medication. My fiance's younger sister can get badly affected by hay fever because she already has existing allergies to pollen, cat hair and she also has asthma. It is usually not serious and will pass in a week or so. However, if you are affected, you can easily get OTC medication in the pharmacies here. Home remedies include installing an air purifier in the home.

Allergic rhinitis which is also known as hay fever, is an allergic response to specific allergens such as pollen, dust, animal dander (old skin), cat saliva and mold. It is the most common childhood ailment caused by allergies and its symptoms include a runny and itchy nose, sneezing, postnasal drip and nasal congestion (blockage). A child with allergies may also have itchy, watery, red eyes and chronic ear problems. Even though it’s commonly known as “hay fever,” allergic rhinitis isn’t triggered by hay and doesn’t cause fever.

The most common cause of this condition in Singapore is house dust mites. Pollution from cigarette smoke, traffic, haze and molds are also potential causes. Keeping the living area clean and limiting your child's exposure to cigarette smoke may help prevent an allergic reaction. If you have carpets at home, be sure to change or clean it frequently to minimize the exposure to dust mites. The same goes for a child's stuffed toys.
