I started wearing makeup pretty young, around 8 years because I was involved in activities like dance and drama. If it were my daughter, when she's curious and want to try, I'd let her try gradually -- maybe start with clear lipgloss and for special occasions like holidays or birthdays if she wants. These days, there are plenty of child friendly make up meant for kids, so I reckon I'd let her experiment with makeup 8 years onwards.
Our daughters watch us put on make up and are persistent to use some too. But personally I don't think it wise for a little girl to wear makeup. I too, only allow it for school functions. My daughter pesters me to let her use my lipstick and nail polish so my standard answer is "when your thumb is as big as mine you can use them" So she comes and measures her thumb with mine every few days!!!
i don't think they need makeup unless they are in their mid-teens or so....and even then very basic. my 10 year old wears basic makeup when she has her dance performances, but hates it. washes them off immediately when she reaches home. i myself love makeup, so my daughters know all about it, but they look it as more of a grown up thing thankfully.
Girls are fond of wearing make up. You can buy a light coloured make up of a good safe brand so that her skin is not damaged by acne or closed pores. More importantly teach her to cleanse away her make up . That way her skin will not suffer and she enjoys getting made up too.
I allow my daughter to wear makeup when she has functions in her school. Else I allow her to wear a light lipstick only once in a while.
