I'd do both just bc I, myself, love receiving gifts bc they hold a sentimental value. I wouldn't get anything expensive, just like a picture frame with a theme of a wedding, or a set of 2 tea cups for "hubby" and "wifey", something like that. And $ of course would be appreciated too.

If I were a newly wed, I'd prefer money over anything else. Same goes for your son's nanny. It can go towards her wedding expenses, future home and family. Money is the practical choice and I'm sure it'll be much appreciated :)

I feel that an ang bao would be a better choice because then she could use the money for her family which was why she left them in the first place, to earn money for them.
