Newborn to 2 months old babies need about 16 to 18 total hours of sleep per day (and usually wake every two or three hours for feeding). They sleep about 8-9 hrs at night and 3-5 naps in the day. By about four months, most babies sleep about ten hours at night (with a few night feedings) and nap for three to five hours of sleep a day (spaced between two or three naps). In the first 6 months, unless your baby literally never wakes up, not even to eat, there is most likely no reason to worry your baby is sleeping too much. If after 6 months and you notice that your baby is still sleeping like a newborn and does not wake up to learn to flip, crawl and sit, you will need to visit a doctor to check on your baby as it may be due to certain medical conditions.

If your baby is sleeping 13-15 hours per day, this is within normal ranges. If your baby is sleeping less, this may or may not be enough sleep. Depending on your baby's age, a typical baby will sleep 11-12 hours at night and 2-3 hours during the day. One way to tell if baby sleeps too much is to observe baby's interaction in general. Normally, when baby is hungry or need attention, baby will cry to get those needs satiated. If a baby sleeps too much, he or she will not initiate much interaction. Mothers end up having to wake baby up for feeding. Another way to tell is to monitor baby's weight. Babies who sleep more tend to eat less and there will a drop in weight.

Newborns tend to sleep a lot. Their sleep is still immature and driven by the basic needs. It is coming for newborns to sleep from 14 to 18 hours a day. During this stage, as long as the baby is still waking up for feedings, a mother shouldn’t be too concerned. Past the newborn stage, it will be like what Idza mentioned, a baby will likely be sleeping for 13-15 hours a day. As a general guide, if your baby is not waking for feedings or is having a fever, it is best to see a doctor as he/she may be having an infection. Follow your gut. It is always safer to consult with your doctor if you suspect something is out of the ordinary.
