Firstly, by not giving them things they simply ask for will be a good start. Things cost money and the world, whether we like it or not, revolve around the dollars and cents. Giving your kids responsibility and teaching them to work hard for what they want will definitely help teach them the value of money at a young age. When I was younger, I remember playing lots of Monopoly at my parents behest -- reckon it definitely taught me the value of money to a large extent.

Don't give a lot of money to the kid. When he is a little older ask him to fetch stuff from shop, give him some money and ask him to give the change back. You can start giving him pocket money and ask him to manage his expenses in that money.
