How would you know if it's false labor or the real thing?

My ob-gyn recommended that I only go to the hospital if the interval of my contractions are 5 mins or less. I suggest that you monitor the intensity and interval of your contractions.

Can you pls clearly advise how to really endure and also ease the initial to mid contraction pains prior to the 5 mins intense contraction pains before going to the hospital?????
