What I do to encourage my 2 years old son to start to brush his teeth since he turned 1: 1. Give him a real toothbrush and non fluoride toothpaste 2. Sing a brush teeth song during brushing teeth 3. I will brush together with him every morning and night 4. I get a step stool for him so he can access the tap water himself 5. Prepare a cup for him to rinse mouth, sometimes he will swollow the tap water but it's part of learning process 6. Do it daily! If you are not consistent kid will hard to pick up the habit and make it a routine
What I do with my kid is, take him brushing at the same time when I do. And if I have done before him, I pretend to do it agin. Also, one more trick that works, which my husband doesn't approve of is, I have bought 7 toothbrushes for each day in a week. So, every morning, he is excited to check out which brush he has to do that day. Just a little money you have to invest in buying 7 brushes, but that sets the kid's habit for a lifetime. Else, I have come across people as old as 35 who do not brush their teeth regularly.
Firstly, we have established brushing time as a routine and my lo cannot get away with it :-) To make it more fun, we've bought him a colourful egg timer so he knows when it is time to stop and rinse. I have also bought him an electric toothbrush and he loves it. Encourages him to be more independent and he likes it that way. And of course, his toothpaste are those sweet baby toothpaste. We will gradually change to the minty ones when he is ready. And finally, we cheer him on!! :-)
I went tooth brush shopping with my daughter when she was younger so she could pick out her own toothbrush. Most hypermarkets have a wide range of kids toothbrush with cartoon characters so she had a good time choosing one. Since she has a sense of ownsership of the toothbrush, I'd say "Wah, now you can have teeth like Cinderalla" or whatever cartoon she picks and the trick works! But I also change her toothbrush regularly.... especially if there's a new cartoon movie lol.
I get a toothbrush in the cartoon that my son like and chose by himself together along with a toothpaste (it comes in a set). We also got him an animal toothbrush holder and cup. But when he started brushing I did not let him use a toothpaste after the first time he tried. He didn't know how to spit out and he swallowed the toothpaste. Only let him use toothpaste after he knows how to spit out.
I guess, set a time for brushing for toddlers so that it becomes a routine. Also, you can begin by yourself brushing at the same time. Children like company. Or you can sing till the time the baby is brushing. Any rhyme on brushing teeth you can sing or play.
