Hi, my 3-month old boy seems to have a lot of phlegm. Any solution how can I help him? Have tried to suck out the phlegm from the nose but there is nothing.

Hi JoAnne, here are the things that I used to do: 1. Hot water in a mug then put salt in it, Let your baby inhale it. This will help moisten the baby's nasal passage way. 2. Saline and suction. Use saline solution then use an aspirator to suction the baby's nose. Be careful when entering the aspirator into the baby’s nostrils, making sure it's inserted only a fourth of the way up the nostrils. Give a gap and then repeat in the other nostril. Do this every so often to help the baby breathe easily. After using the syringe, sterilize it by washing it with hot soapy water and let it dry before use. 3. It is very important to breastfeed the baby, because breast milk will provide him/her the nutrients and antibiotics that he/she needs all the while keeping him/her hydrated. To help the baby breathe better, tilt his/her crib or put a pillow under the mattress to elevate the baby and ease the passageway to drain the mucus into the throat. Hope this helps.

I have tried out the methods below to reduce phlegm and cough for my son when he was young: - switch off aircon at night and avoid fan blowing directly at him. - patting method which using cup shaped hand to pat on his back about 5minutes for a few times in a day to loosen the phlegm. (refer to the picture attached) - while baby is sleeping, try to lie him in an inclined position instead of lying flat. - rub some baby vicks in your hands and apply on baby's feet and wear socks for baby will help in reduce cough during sleep too. - there is a traditional chinese soup remedies you may want to try to boil for your little one to reduce coughing: http://www.thehongkongcookery.com/2014/10/chinese-pear-herbal-tonic-soup.html

Try steaming and percussion method. You put hot water in a basin, let your baby face it, not too near but not too far. Let him inhale the steam. Cup your hand and pat at his left and right sides of his body. I found a lengthy explanation in this blog but in malay: http://littlelovelyleez.blogspot.my/2013/09/natural-remedies-batuk-dan-selsema.html?m=1 You can refer the pic too. I did it before and it helped my baby. The phlegm did come out afterwards.

If you believe in chinese food, you can cook this for your baby to drink a little bit. It works wonders for mine when I tried it! Use 1 green apple (only green apple will work!) sliced and cored with skin on. Make sure to wash them clean! Add 8 red dates and put the apple and red dates with 1-2 cups of water inside a slow cooker or double boiler and cook until the color of the water turns slightly brown. Then wait till cooled to feed baby. Do not add sugar for babies!

Firstly bring him to a doctor to check if their is any infection. secondly, do the cupping method to dislodge the phlegm thirdly, i would use a nasal spray to soften the phlegm then use a nasal sucker to suck it out. It will take some time but it will work as our nose is connected to the lungs area

The PD recommended to use sterimar spray into the nose and then use a nasal aspirator to suck out the phlegm. Sterimar spray softens the phlegm and the nasal aspirator sucks it out afterwards.
