I don't think it's a good idea. The consequences will be grave if he finds out. A relationship is based on trust. Once either party breach it, it's hard to repair. Why not try other methods to sound him out?

What you don't know won't hurt you. Assumptions can destroy a good thing. Rather talk to the person that try to be a PI, if they are busy playing games their own lives will catch up with them.
