I think hospital insurance is much more important than maternity insurance as the coverage is more even for pregnancy complications. Otherwise it depends on your budget and what you want for your baby. Whether you want it to be a life plan after baby is born or just for maternity. Need to do your research as different moms have different needs for their babies. :) I bought AIA for my firstborn, can be transferred to baby once baby is born as life plan. When I gave birth to her, I had post-delivery complication so my maternity insurance did not cover anything. Only my hospital insurance did. Maternity insurance is coverage during pregnancy not after, do take note cause some are still confused about this.

http://talkmoneylah.com/maternity-insurance-necessary/ Apparently some maternity insurance provides baby with guaranteed shield plan and whole life with CI cover baby with no need for underwriting

I just bought mine at 34 weeks. bought a baisc one + a better coverage for my bb once he's born which will automatically transferred to him(life policy)
