Hi, UTI usually happens when the germs from the poo area when on the skin enters the urethra and into the bladder. Testing the urine is the best way to check the baby for UTI. Treatments as you mentioned is, baby is put on antibiotics for 5 to 7 days. My baby once had a UTI, and she had to take antibiotics for 5 days. Within 48 hours she showed signs of improvement. If the child has UTI, other tests like MCU may be done to find if there are other problems in the urinary tract. MCU is not routinely done. It is only done if the condition called urinary reflux is suspected. One should take utmost care about the Hygiene of the baby and after cleaning after per and wee, should wipe the area from front to back with a dry tissue so that the area is not wet.
UTI is a common childhood illness, and worldwide, it has been reported to affect about 2 per cent of boys and 8 per cent of girls by the age of 7. When my baby had uti at 3 months going on 4, the doctor out him in on a 10 day antibiotic course. Do observe your baby when Yiu start antibiotic. I have heard of babies who are allergic to it.
How old is your baby? 6 weeks on antibiotics means the infection must be pretty bad, im so sorry. :( Would u might consider a good probiotics to boost her immune system to fight back the infections? I wish for fast recovery for your baby.
My 2yo niece has been taking antibiotics for past 1.5 years..I think she also did some sort of scan which my sister told me that was quite frightening for them
She was put on 7 day gentamicin antibiotic. Remember to keep diaper dry at all times, consider switching diapers as well and wipe from front to back
