Why are the Indian mothers so possessive about their sons?

Mothers are so possessive about their sons as they feel that they have given them birth and provided everything so that he can serve when they get old. But parents irrespective of whether a son or daughter, kids do have to right to take care of their parents. It's an old mentality of son being and investment and daughter for marriage purposes.
