What to do when your toddler screams?

In my experience, the last thing you'd want to do is to have a screaming match with a toddler having a tantrum. Speaking to them in a low, firm voice is WAY more effective than yelling; it calms them down and forces them to lower the volume of their own voice. They tend to mimic your tone even if they don't realize it.
