NEWBORN STOMACH SIZE- FOR FTM
The volume a newborn baby can take on is often overrated! Your breasts produce the perfect first food, first fluids and complete nourishment in colostrum. It is completely normal for them to take only 1-1.5 teaspoon per feed on Day 1-2. On Day 3 this volume begins to change as colostrum makes way for breastmilk. What drives me crazy is seeing a 30ml+ bottle of formula given to babies in hospital either to “supplement” or “top up” ? The thing is, when that bottle is stuck in that baby’s mouth they will inevitably swallow it as it’s different than being at the breast with only colostrum on tap, and a different mouth/body position than breastfeeding. Even when the bulk of the colostrum amount has been taken, that stimulus on the breast is the baby “putting in their orders” for the next feed, and the next feed and the next. They are signalling to the mother’s body that there is a baby here now, please ensure the milk production is on and stays on ? So this large volume of formula invariably this ends up being vomited back up, upsetting baby and mum ? Their tiny stomachs just cant handle that sheer and unnecessary volume ? If you’re pregnant and planning to breastfeed get informed about how your body works to make breastmilk and what enhances - and hinders - this process.??????? #breastfeeding #colostrum #breastmilk #firstfeed #skintoskin Post from #bodywisebirthwise
