Well I must've grown up in a similar situation because when I was about 6, my dad bought me an N64. I'm not sure how much it actually helps with development, but in moderation (and with parental guidance) video games can be a fun outlet for kids. I think 5 years or so is an appropriate age to invest in a game console. Especially nowadays where you can easily download digital versions of the games, you won't ever have to worry about software and games being damaged and losing value.
