My sister carries her 4-month old son at almost all the time of the day - whether he's awake or asleep. Usually the way she carries him is upward (chin rests on her shoulder). Is this a good practice? She's a full-time mom. But I'm thinking there should be enough breathing space for themselves too right?

Is the baby having reflux or colic problem? Normally if baby has these problems need to be carried all the time to get the comfort. Otherwise, it is good to let baby to spend time on bed/floor. 4 months old should be able to play by himself already. For me, I prefer to let baby to play independently as baby need not to be entertained all the time and they can self-entertain actually, e.g. by playing with their hands and fingers. If your sister is too attached to the baby or the baby is too attached to the mother, in future it is harder to train baby to self-play independently. Just to share, my daugther always want me to be by her side to play with her since she is a baby as I always cling to her too. On the other hand, I always give opportunity for my son to self play and now he is able to play independently for a long period without whining.

Actually even animals carry their babies all the time. It's part of human nature and there's nothing wrong with it. Perhaps your sister may feel exhausted from the carrying, but may be she doesn't need the breathing space? Benefits of carrying baby: -Baby gets to see the world from your point of view and interacts with more adults hence learning speech and facial expressions more -Carrying baby around teaches them about balance and allows them to pick up motor skills faster -Less crying -Lower stress -Improved bonding http://www.marksdailyapple.com/why-you-should-wear-or-carry-your-baby/#axzz3z61QHcUN Probably she should babywear instead of just carrying baby so that she can have free hands to do whatever she needs to and also protect her back.

I agree with Stephanie. It's really perfectly fine if she carries her baby everywhere she goes. Sure, her baby might be a little more clingy because of it but if she isn't complaining, I don't see why not. Perhaps, in this case, it's the mother who's clingy? Lol.
