Breastfeeding is between the mother and child. Nobody else has the right to dictate when a baby should be weaned. There's no need to even wean them off the breast as some children just self-wean when they feel that they have had enough of mummy's boobs and no longer need to suckle. Extended breastfeeding has not proven to be detrimental, and the antibodies in breastmilk will still continue to strengthen the child's immune system.
Please tell her not to be affected by people's comments. Just smile and tell them you will wean when baby is fully ready. For me, when my parents and grandmother saw me still latching my 2 years old toddler they will comment it is time to wean because I am pregnant and I understand where they are coming from. I told them I will wean once myself and the baby are ready to do so. And yes, within a month we managed to do it smoothly.
Yeah, i had a (swinging single) girlfriend who joked "so you're planning to breastfeed till she turns 13??" I didnt know how to react to that and just smiled. No pt explaining, i feel. My parents are okay just that my mum is worried about my health since nursing can be tiring. In law's didn't say much too, so the pressure wasn't too bad from internal, more external when they see mums breastfeeding a toddler.
