I had a 4th degree tear (tore sphincter muscles) 12 months ago. Still dealing with pain at the scar tissues at the moment. At 2 weeks, the midwife said my stitches have almost dissolved and was recovering well but that’s just the superficial side of an unfortunate 4th degree tear recovery! If anyone has had a 4dt, the first follow up should be sooner than 6 weeks just to ensure the post-surgery was done well and no other issues present like fecal incontinence or fistula (leaking through vagina). Seeing a pelvic floor therapist helped mobilize the scar tissues and identify what needs to be worked on.

I don’t know if I have 3rd or 4th degree tears as my gynae refused to tell me. But I took close to 6 weeks for the wound to recover and to walk and sit properly
