I think this varies from mothers to mothers. Most mothers swear that breastfeeding helps them to lose weight as Jamie mentioned it burns calories. But some mummies that I know ended up snacking a lot because breastfeeding makes them hungrier so they'd end up eating more and putting back the calories. For myself personally, I don't breastfeed so my weight was pretty much stagnant until the start of the year when I started putting more serious action into it.
I breastfed both of my kids until they were 2.5 years old. I think breastfeeding really helped me to loose my weight very fast, I was able to get back my pre-pregnancy weight 3-4 months post delivery. However, I did see some of my friends who were breastfeeding fully gained weight instead as they tend to eat more during breastfeeding. Thus, I think it depends on individual's diets also.
It is true that breastfeeding burns about 300 to 500 calories per day, but remember the golden rule - calories consumed > calories expended = weight gain. You still have to put in effort and be mindful of what you eat. That doesn't mean you should go on a diet. Just choose healthy alternatives. http://www.womenshealthmag.com/mom/breastfeeding-burns-calories
