I am 17mths post-partum and have been fully bfing my daughter. My menses came back when I was 9mths pp. Since last Monday, I noticed my milk supply has dropped from usual 360ml to only 290ml (when I pump at work). I am not an oversupply mom to start with. Any idea why the drastic drop in supply? Is it possible to build back my supply or can I re-establish my supply? Thanks!

Hi mummy, Just curious.. the drop in supply just noticeable at 17mths pp? Normally when menses came back, most mummies will experience drop in supply almost immediately. You are consider quite good in maintaining the supply till 17mths pp. For natural way, you can try nursing tea. Besides nursing tea, you can also consume a type of herbs call "fenugreek". Some mummies find it good, but some mummies don't really find it helpful. Continue searching for the right booster. Good luck. I remember that I drank "chatime" milk tea.. it help to boost the supply. Kinda of funny but true. Lol

One of the reasons is hormonal changes. A drop in blood calcium levels during menstruation can lead to drop of your milk supply. There are some ways to help increase your milk supply, such taking calcium/magnesium supplement during menstruation, eating oatmeal (or oatmeal lactation cookies as alternative) and drink fenugreek. The last two suggestions are quite popular among breastfeeding moms. You can read more here:http://exclusivepumping.com/2013/12/28/what-you-can-do-when-your-period-tanks-your-milk-supply/

Drop in prolactin levels is quite likely to be the explanation here. At 17mo, you should focus on encouraging your bub on solids and take the stress away from your pump output.
