Eating soft-boiled or raw eggs is not recommended while you are pregnant because of the risk that the eggs may carry salmonella bacteria. Salmonella food poisoning is an extremely unpleasant illness. It may lead to the following:- severe vomiting and diarrhoea abdominal pain headache very high temperature Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics and you will need to replace the fluids your body has lost to avoid dehydration. At times hospital treatment is needed. When you are pregnant, your immune system is lower than normal so you are more susceptible to all the germs responsible for food poisoning and are more likely to be badly affected. Salmonella poisoning will not directly harm your baby but it is best to try to avoid the bacteria to maintain your own health and well being.

Soft-boiled or raw eggs may carry salmonella bacteria, therefore, we would not suggest this while you're pregnant. You may want to cook eggs until both the yolk and white are solid. This destroys salmonella bacteria and makes the eggs safe to eat. Bacteria such as salmonella and listeria can be found in raw eggs and these may cause food poisoning and may even lead to miscarriage, still birth and respiratory infections or meningitis in the newborn. Therefore, it is best to opt for fully cooked egg to minimize the risk. The same bacteria can also be found in raw meat. So it is also advisable to avoid raw or partially-cooked meat such as sashimi, and medium-rare steak.

Personally, I would avoid any animal product that is not fully cooked. I know some friends with doctors giving them the go ahead to eat a piece of sushi or sashimi every now and then but personally I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't dare take the risk. Heard too many horror stories about salmonella, listeria and poisoning.

My wife loves over-easy and soft boiled eggs. I use pasteurized eggs if she wants to eat them this way. If you're going to cook them all the way through, regular eggs will do.

I wasn't aware of the danger of eating soft boiled eggs during pregnancy, ate it a few times till birth. :x baby is safe & healthy. I guess just eat safely. Don't worry too much.
