Living separately while waiting for BTO

Hi all, any couples lived separately (1-2 years) after getting married while waiting for your flat to be ready? If so, how to explain to in laws that we want to live separately?

Told our parents that it doesn't make sense for us to move all my things over for just one year and then move everything to the new place so we'll just stay apart for 1 year.
