What are the pros and cons of raising bilingual children?

Cons: They learn to write and read slower than single language kids Pros: Knowing multiple languages! Lol

How to avoid confusion from teaching bilingual to kid? I'm afraid it will affect my kid's abillity to speak.

did you know that kids can really pick up multiple languages with ease, and that it only helps to sharpen their intelligence? i suggest if you and your partner know more than one language, use it at home and speak to your kid. you'll be confused at how easily your child picks up the languages.

My daughter really love to watch learning video at youtube.. but it makes her more interest in english than indonesian language. Is that okay if she learn the name lof all the thing in 2 language? She is 2,5 yrs old now.. and she able to determine the name of object in both language. Is it better to focus in 1 language or is that okay to learn both of them in same time? Thank you :)

My daughter speaks fluent English and learns Chinese in school. But we don't speak Chinese. n this case, is it essential that she takes extra classes in Chinese?

i have an 8mth old at home, hub n i speak to him in english, where both side grandparents in mandarin & hokkien. Lately, hub's nephew who had attended childcare for a year only speak in english to everyone (including his china mum), and his english has a strong american slang while he cant even properly pronounce 1-10 in mandarin. Im thinking is it necessary for hub n myself to start switching to mandarin so that after attending childcare he will not just speak english? In my personal perspective it is more difficult to master Chinese than English thus im worried m

Arghh im Struggling as well. You. Are not alone. Guess what, my boy refuses to speak mandarin to me. When i speak to him, he will give me the blur look. Really out of my wits ..

Are flashcards really good and effective? I just bought a whole set of them and can't wait to start on it.

There are 2 school of thoughts. What's your view on tv n ipad for the kids? I would say the fast movements of flash cards words the same way as tv/ipad. If u are ok with tv n ipad then yes flash cards if not should actually avoid it

Do you think it's a little too overwhelming for my 4yr old if we are trying to teach her 3 languages right now? (English, Malay and Thai, due to our heritage). Should we stick to just 2 and explore the third language later on? Or is it ok to introduce them all to her now?

What a beautiful blend of heritage you have there! I was told that kids brains are like sponges! The more they are exposed to, the more they will learn. As long as you don't make it stressful and academic focus, I don't think it will be overwhelming. Focusing on the cultural perspective (music, costumes, food etc ) together with the language will make it more interesting and definitely less overwhelming for your kid.

How to make my kid to speak comparably fluent for both language?

Hi Syareefa, if you watch ParentTV's interview with me, I have learnt that one tends to have one dominant language. In my case, it is English. But I am still able to attain a decent level in my other language. All the best!

What kind of activities can we do to teach Mandarin to young kids below 1yr old?

Hi Michelle, you can watch the videos on my website (www.dianaser.com). You may need to adapt them because your child is younger. I played a lot of music ( mommy sing along), read books and spoke to my kids when they were babies. Speak to him/her during routine activity like changing diaper, showering, eating etc. All the best!
