When will my baby get his/her own immune system?

An infant’s immune system doesn’t mature until around 2 to 3 months, assuming the baby is a term baby. If the baby is born prematuredly, the baby's immune system will only start maturing 2 to 3 months after the supposed due date. In those first few months, the immune system — especially cell-mediated immunity — becomes more developed. This is very important in helping a child fight off viruses.This means that a 2-week-old baby’s immune system can’t fight viruses or bacteria nearly as well as a 3-month-old infant’s can.

Is it normal to be short of breath after every few hours during this stage of pregnancy?

What can be done if my baby's umbilical cord gets tangled around his/her neck or body in late pregnancy?

It is quite common to around the baby's necks and limbs, and does not affect the baby. It is an issue if it is wrapped around tightly. Nothing can be done to unravel the cord and in some cases, if the cord is tightly wrapped around, accompanied by signs of the baby in distress, the doctor may opt for a c-section.

My stretch marks have turned red. What do I do?

The reason stretch marks turn red is because of rapid expansion and stretching of the skin. Best way to prevent it is to use creams and moisturisers. Since stretch marks occur from skin stretching, the resulting red marks are most common in certain parts of the body at risk for stretching. You can think of new stretch marks as small injuries to your skin. Your skin then has a mild inflammatory response as your tissues try to adapt to the stretching effects. This explains why fresh stretch marks are red. The redness doesn’t last forever. As stretch marks heal, they’ll eventually turn white and start to become less noticeable as they fade over time.

When can I expect my stretch marks to go away?

Will I need a caesarean if my baby is breech?

If your doctor thinks that your baby is still breech at 36 weeks pregnant then you should a have scan to confirm this. If the scan shows that your baby is breech, the doctor will likely offer you an external cephalic version (ECV). ECV is when the obstetrician will put pressure on specific parts of your bump to encourage your baby to move round in the womb. An ECV can be done from 36 weeks all the way up until early labour, as long as your waters have not yet broken. It is successful for around 50% of women. If successful, you will be less likely to need a caesarean section or other medical assistance during labour

How do I differentiate between the mucus plug and normal discharge?

The mucus plug usually refers to that near delivery, around 36 to 38 weeks. It is like a plug in the cervix that acts as a barrier to infection. As the pregnancy nears delivery, the cervix will dilate and the plug then falls out. The expelled mucous plug is called “show"and it can be a sign that you might be delivering soon. During pregnancy, it is normal to have increased vaginal discharge. Normal vaginal discharge is odourless to faint musty with no itch, is clear or faintly cloudy with the occasional dark pearl colour and is rarely grey-yellow.

I am feeling increased pressure in my lower belly. I feel I can't take this pressure any more. What should i do?

As your uterus grows, the ligaments that support it are pulled and stretched. This can cause dull or sharp pains on either side of your belly. These pains are most common between weeks 18 and 24. To prevent or relieve pains: Avoid moving quickly, especially at the waist. Bend toward the pain to help relieve it. Rest or change your position. There are some abdominal supports that are designed for pregnancy that can help.

What is meconium and meconium aspiration syndrome?

Meconium is the passage of the baby's stool. It is a bowel movement that baby makes which doesn't usually happen before delivery unless the baby is stressed during delivery and usually is in the amniotic fluid. Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) happens when a newborn has trouble breathing because meconium got into the lungs, causing a reaction in the lungs. Meconium can make it harder to breathe because it can: clog the airways irritate the airways and injure lung tissue block surfactant, a fatty substance that helps open the lungs after birth
