I am not able to walk properly, as i feel to heavy to walk. Is this normal?

Can I try for a vaginal birth if I’m carrying twins?

I am getting persistent back pain. Is this the sign of preterm labour?

It may not be the case. The signs of premature labour includes: either a slow trickle or a gush of clear or pinkish fluid from your vagina or any increase in vaginal discharge, backache, cramps like strong period pains, a frequent need to urinate, a feeling of pressure in your pelvis, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. If you experience more than just backache, please consult your doctor for a further assessment

Are epidurals dangerous to me and/or my baby?

As the epidural drug kicks in, some women experience a drop in blood pressure, so yours will be checked frequently. IV fluids and lying on your side will help counteract any dips. Very rarely, an epidural causes a headache, fever or soreness. The opioids in the epidural may also make you feel itchy (which can be taken care of with another medication) and, in rare cases, cause nausea and vomiting. In extremely rare cases, epidurals can injure the spinal cord and nerves and result in breathing problems. And in the very, very rare case that the needle and drugs hit a vein instead of a nerve, it can cause numbness, tingling or rapid heartbeat. Epidurals are often a combination of anesthetics and opioid analgesics, the latter of which can increase the chance that your baby will have a temporary change in heart rate, trouble breathing, drowsiness and reduced muscle tone, and it may initially make it trickier to latch on and breastfeed. These possible issues are only in the short term and don't last long, but for that reason, continuous fetal monitoring is usually required with an epidural.

I had a postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) after my first born. What is it and could it happen to me again?

Postpartum hemorrhage is when a woman bleeds excessively after delivery. If you have it in your first pregnancy, there is a higher chance of it happening in your subsequent pregnancies. Do let your doctor know so that he/she can make the necessary arrangements and precautions.

What is bloody show and what does it look like?

Expert

The bloody show refers to vaginal discharge that occurs at the end of your pregnancy. It’s a sign that your mucus plug has loosened or already has been dislodged. During pregnancy, the cervix is covered by a thick plug of mucus that helps protect the baby. The mucus literally “plugs” your uterus. This prevents any bacteria or other sources of infection from getting past the cervical barrier.

How big is the epidural injection? Will it hurt? Is a "bloody show" (mucus tinged with blood) in the toilet a sign of labour?

The spinal needle is much smaller—the width of a thick piece of hair. But before this happens, the injection site is numbed with a local anesthetic, at which point you will feel a pinch and sting for about 10 seconds. You'll feel pressure, but not pain, when the epidural and/or spinal itself is given. Bloody show is a sign that the blood vessels in the cervix are rupturing as it effaces and dilates. The cervix undergoes significant changes during the third trimester of pregnancy. As labor approaches, two main changes occur: effacement, which occurs when the lining of the cervix becomes softer and thinner dilation, which occurs when the opening to the cervix widens

What's the difference between a planned and an emergency caesarean?

Planned c-sections may happen for a variety of reasons before the onset of labour - previous c-section, complications in pregnancy, or request for c-section. It is scheduled in advanced and everything is planned beforehand. An emergency c-section happens when a decison has been made to deliver the baby quickly, and this is usually decided when there is an issue with labour such as slow labour progression or the baby being in distress.
