Ask The Expert Series: How to Maintain a Healthy Weight During Pregnancy

Hi there! How's everyone doing today? I'm super excited to be here with you for this upcoming topic on maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy. -------------------- Here are some questions asked in our community, and we got the answers for you ✅ 👩‍💼Hi! Im experiencing extreme vomiting and sometimes i had diarrhea in the morning or rather loose/ watery stools. I lost weight so much, now im 46.6kg. Do i have to be worried bout this situation im in right now. Im stressed out cause i cant seem to get food or water down for a long time. It would just come out after half n hour atleast. 👩‍🔬Your symptoms sound very disturbing for you. With multiple episodes of vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and loss of appetite, please do see a medical practitioner to assess the severity of weight loss, hydration and have an abdominal examination for further advice on your condition. 👩‍💼I feel like I need to eat carbs every 2 hours, or I get quite uncomfortable. And I can eat almost a full meal every time I eat, which is quite worrisome as I don’t want to gain too much weight or risk GD! Even waking up and drinking Milo with crackers is not enough for breakfast, only enough to gain some minimal energy so I can go and buy more food. must eat some noodles as a second breakfast then nausea will settle. 👩‍🔬For a healthy diet, it is important to have a balanced proportion of carbohydrates, protein and fibre, and make sure there's lots of water intake to stay well hydrated. Sometimes, it is better to take multiple small meals if one feels too nauseated with a large meal. In terms of portion, it is generally recommended to take normal portions in first trimester, extra 350kcal/day in second trimester and 450kcal/day in third trimester. Hope that helps! 👩‍💼I've entered 2nd trimester and now gaining alot of weight. I used to weigh 58kg before pregnancy, 50kg in my 1st trimester (the nausea and vomiting was really bad, and I had no appetite), and now I weigh 55kg in my 2nd trimester because I'm eating more frequently. 👩‍🔬Weight gain in pregnancy is normal and is expected to be different in mothers of varying BMI. For a mother whose BMI is 18-24.9kg/m2, an estimated weight gain of about 12kg - 16kg is usually acceptable.

Dear user, thank you for your entry. Diabetes in pregnancy or Gestational diabetes are conditions that need to be monitored closely by your obstetrician. It is paramount to have well-controlled glucose readings during pregnancy, due to risk of fetal or maternal complications if poorly controlled. Sometimes, a consultation with a dietitian can be considered very useful to decide on the carbohydrate intake through calorie counting or designing a meal plan, paired with close monitoring of capillary glucose.
