Ask The Expert Series: How to Maintain a Healthy Weight During Pregnancy

Hi there! How's everyone doing today? I'm super excited to be here with you for this upcoming topic on maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy. -------------------- Here are some questions asked in our community, and we got the answers for you ✅ 👩‍💼Hi! Im experiencing extreme vomiting and sometimes i had diarrhea in the morning or rather loose/ watery stools. I lost weight so much, now im 46.6kg. Do i have to be worried bout this situation im in right now. Im stressed out cause i cant seem to get food or water down for a long time. It would just come out after half n hour atleast. 👩‍🔬Your symptoms sound very disturbing for you. With multiple episodes of vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and loss of appetite, please do see a medical practitioner to assess the severity of weight loss, hydration and have an abdominal examination for further advice on your condition. 👩‍💼I feel like I need to eat carbs every 2 hours, or I get quite uncomfortable. And I can eat almost a full meal every time I eat, which is quite worrisome as I don’t want to gain too much weight or risk GD! Even waking up and drinking Milo with crackers is not enough for breakfast, only enough to gain some minimal energy so I can go and buy more food. must eat some noodles as a second breakfast then nausea will settle. 👩‍🔬For a healthy diet, it is important to have a balanced proportion of carbohydrates, protein and fibre, and make sure there's lots of water intake to stay well hydrated. Sometimes, it is better to take multiple small meals if one feels too nauseated with a large meal. In terms of portion, it is generally recommended to take normal portions in first trimester, extra 350kcal/day in second trimester and 450kcal/day in third trimester. Hope that helps! 👩‍💼I've entered 2nd trimester and now gaining alot of weight. I used to weigh 58kg before pregnancy, 50kg in my 1st trimester (the nausea and vomiting was really bad, and I had no appetite), and now I weigh 55kg in my 2nd trimester because I'm eating more frequently. 👩‍🔬Weight gain in pregnancy is normal and is expected to be different in mothers of varying BMI. For a mother whose BMI is 18-24.9kg/m2, an estimated weight gain of about 12kg - 16kg is usually acceptable.

Ask the Expert Series: Common Causes of Miscarriages

Hello everyone! Excited to “see” you! I am Dr Smily Lock, Head of Healthcare Solutions - Chronic and Long-Term Care. A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 23 weeks. The main signs of a miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, and missed pregnancy symptoms followed by cramping and pain. Various factors increase the risk of miscarriage. You can learn here many more things about miscarriages and their causes. --------------------------------------- Here are some questions asked in our community, and we got the answers for you ✅ 👩‍💼Which food can cause miscarriage in pregnancy? 👩‍🔬Hi there, thanks for your question. Certain maternal infections like Listeria monocytogenes can lead to miscarriage. To prevent listeriosis, avoid eating these foods in pregnancy: unpasteurised milk and soft cheeses, refrigerated pate and meat spreads, refrigerated smoked seafood and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Raw or undercooked meat should also be avoided during pregnancy due to risk of toxoplasmosis, an infection with bacteria often found in raw meat. - Dr Smily 👩‍💼Can pregnancy stress cause miscarriage? 👩‍🔬Hi there, thanks for your question. The most common causes of miscarriage include chromosomal abnormalities, congenital abnormalities, endocrine disorders and clotting disorders. Pregnancy stress is not a major cause of miscarriage. - Dr Smily 👩‍💼Is brown discharge in the 2nd trimester a sign of miscarriage? 👩‍🔬 Hi there, thanks for your question. Discharge during pregnancy should be assessed by an obstetrician - do seek a medical consultation early if you do experience such symptoms. - Dr Smily
