How much does it cost to raise a family of 5?
Is it possible to be a sahm if husband’s salary is only abt $4K before cpf? With 3 kids in tow. Plan to quit job when I move into new hse.
I see alot of its doable comments, I think they are very nice or either that have very good planning. but personally I feel that you can barely survive the winter( tough times, inflation etc). kids fall sick easily, if 2 or 3 fall sick per month the doctor bill will eat a big hole out of your budget. electricity bill rising, food price rising. I think before you want to be sthm you have to have some side income. it's tough reality here. your husband or anyone else job is not permanent. if he gets laid off or quit due to any reason do you have at least 6 months of cash to tide you through? something to consider.
Read moreI think it’s doable. Plan your finances properly before you quit. If you feel it won’t be enough to support a family of 5, you can consider taking up courses to supplement doing part time jobs. You can also do pet sitting, baby sitting, learn how to do diaper cakes, bake, do sandwiches, learn how to do massages, etc. Maybe you can have a bank account that pays all your house bills so that you don’t touch that money. An account for food. A money pouch for misc whatnots. Give yourself 1-2 years at least to keep these savings aside before you quit your job.

I mean this in the best way possible… I believe that raising children is not just about making sure that they have food and shelter, but also giving them opportunities to have fun, to enrich their learning. With $4k before CPF, it might be a stretch to give the children things like toys, books, outdoor experiences, outings with friends etc.
Read moreYes of course, but cannot eat out or order. We rarely go out too. Can feel quite bored with this lifestyle. Everything so expensive. I’m a sahm 2 kids with my husband salary abt 3k . No choice since my kids get sick often from gg to sch and no one to take care. So far no big problems but Always save money too for rainy days. I do some side business too just to keep myself sane😅
Read morehonestly, imho, no. take home pay = $3200? 5 mouths to feed including 3 (I assume) young kids? I am single mom, 2 young sons, live with my mother, same salary & its barely enough... many times need to fall back on my savings.. diapers, milk all expensive lei..
it is possible but depending on your lifestyle and expectations. and also, what is your husband's view on this? depending on kids' ages, u being a sahm means cutting cost on childcare/student care. need to do some expenses planning before you jump into it.
write down ur expense and see how much u will need to pay for essentials and it can also be pressuring to ur hubby u might want to talk to him or work part time to manage kids and home expense atleast won't be too hard on ur hubby.
Doable, but it’s going to be very very hard…. And make sure you have emergency funds….. sufficient savings before you quit your job. You will need to live a very very frugal lifestyle….
It depends on how you spend.. $4K for a family of 5 in 2022, probably a tighter budget but still doable if you plan your finances and spending well.
Doable. Just make sure you have plenty of savings before you quit just in case. It also depends on your lifestyle and your expenditure.
