Parents pls advice me. My 2 yr old wakes up every night around 12-1, hysterically laughing and she even says bye bye and stuff. I initially thought she was dreaming so I would pat her back, but she keeps her eyes open while she is smiling and laughing. What is actually happening?

Honestly, I got a bit creeped out when I first read this question but that's because I watch too many horror movies. It sounds alot like parasomnia , specifically "night terrors", which are fairly common in children. They would talk, laugh, scream or sometimes walk in their sleep for a few minutes before falling back into deep sleep. Night terrors could happen due to overstimulation in the day, eating a heavy meal right before bedtime or due to stimulating gadgets like tv, ipads etc. One way to reduce night terrors is to break the cycle and establish a new one. Waking the child up before the night terror actually happens is a proven method. Since you mentioned that your baby wakes up around 12-1 am every night, try to wake her up half an hour before in order to break the cycle. You could wake baby up for a night feeding or to check her diaper. After that, just lull her back to bed as usual. In the long run, this will disrupt her night terror cycle permanently and hopefully it will go away for good. This method may seem difficult, to wake a child up while he or she is peacefully sleeping, but if the night terrors is worrisome, I highly recommend this method.

Like what Yuna mentioned, your baby may be having night terrors. These are different from nightmares. Nightmares usually start when children who are 3 to 4 years old, and children wake up from them feeling scared (and could remember the nightmare). But with a night terror, it usually happens during deep sleep when the baby is not dreaming. The baby’s sleep suddenly gets disrupted and he/she may suddenly start crying or screaming in distress. The baby is not aware that he/she is crying (or in your case, laughing etc), and is not likely to remember this the next morning. Fortunately, night terror is not found to have any harmful effects on babies and will outgrow them. To help, simply make sure that your baby is safe, comfort him/she (if needed) and she will eventually quiet down.

I am not sure you all do believe or not. My son woke up in the middle of night for about 2 weeks, crying and pointing to the same area every night. Actually I think he did see something that I can't see. What I did was... I will go to that area that he pointed and act like chasing it away. Then my son will stop crying then. I believe the exixtence of spirit that related to past lifes... so he may see a spirit that maybe his someone close past life. It sounds absurb, but this is really what happenned to my son.

Too much stimulation in the day or near bedtime may causes this. Try to create a routine that will calm your child before she goes to sleep. Perhaps some light massage, soft lullabies or reading good night stories can help.
