First up, rashes in kids are a common problem and can happen because of a diaper, skin allergy, bug bite, dry skin or sun burn. Second, There are many home remedies you can try. Here's a few: - Fragrance-free bath oil: Bath oils can counter the affects of dryness caused by long baths. Put it on after a shower. - Grounded oatmeal: Ground oatmeal soothes inflamed skin and you can use it to counter poison ivy, eczema or even itchy skin. - Petroleum jelly: Easily available and easy-to-use, you can use petroleum jelly to heal dry, chapped skin. It traps moisture in the skin and keeps it hydrated. It is especially useful for diaper rashes. - Sunscreen: This item may be available in your house. You should consult the doctor to confirm the brand of the sunscreen. It will protect your baby from sun's rays and prevent premature skin aging. - Ice: Ice is extremely beneficial for skin rashes in toddlers and kids (4-9 years). But check with your doctor if the rash continues to remain or increases in size. - Gentle soap: Make sure to use a gentle soap for your baby. It won't cause any rashes or dryness. Hope this helps.

Calamine lotion works best for rashes in kids. Also try aloe vera gel. A good way to see if a rash is worth the trip to the doctor is by stretching the skin of the affected area. I read about it in Dr Spock's book of parenting and childcare. If the skin looks fine on stretching, perhaps it's a temporary thing and would go away in a couple of days. If it looks red and inflamed, rush to the doctor immediately.
