If you are exclusively breastfeeding your baby, you should not feed water to baby. This is because breastmilk already contain approximately 80% waters. By drinking more water it can fill up baby leading to them drinking less milk which can lead to malnutrition or water intoxication. Many elderly believe in feeding plain water to baby likely because they had fed their children with water and they grew up without issue. You can try showing them cases where babies get intoxicated by drinking water and explain to them that you rarer be careful than sorry. Here's are a few case studies. http://www.popsugar.com/moms/Baby-Dies-After-Parents-Dilute-Breast-Milk-37511059 http://www.hkjpaed.org/pdf/2002;7;165-168.pdf
