Breastfeeding Challenges and Frustration

My LO is 7 days old and I have been facing many challenges in terms of breastfeeding since day 1. I had an emergency C-sec and my flow didn’t start till day 3. I kept massaging my breast and tried to collect the colostrum in syringes and fed baby. I however couldn’t do too much skin to skin or try and latch him due to my flat nipples and extreme pain. The midwives did try to help but nothing worked out. My LO starts grunting and turning red the moment I try to latch him. Then finally my milk supply started and to not waste time I bought a pump and started pumping. Though it was less, I didn’t want to let go any. I was also told nipple shield which I tried and yet he didn’t want to latch. I am scared that he is now too comfortable with bottle feeds and will never latch. I do not want to loose hope. My MiL is concerned and now wants me to feed in front of her to help me latch( and I am honestly not comfortable doing that). I really want to breastfeed! Help!

Hi dear, it warms my heart that you’re doing so much so that you can breastfeed your baby ❤️ Flat nipples can be challenging indeed, and you’re still recovering from surgery too. It’s hard to give any practical advice over a platform like this, but there are lactation consultants who can help you, to show you how to latch on or techniques to overcome flat nipples (how to draw them out just enough so baby can latch, etc). They’re different from midwives. Consider making an appointment with one? And dear, no one should have to breastfeed in front of their MIL if they don’t want to 🙂
