When baby boy is in his mommy's womb, his testicles typically form inside his abdomen and descend into the scrotum shortly before birth. In some cases, the descent doesn't occur, and the baby is born with a condition known as undescended testicles, or medically known as cryptorchidism. Cryptorchidism is the most common genital abnormality in boys, affecting approximately 30% of baby boys born prematurely and about 4% born at term. In about half of the babies, the undescended testicles move down on their own by the sixth month of life. If descent doesn't happen by then, it is imperative to get treatment because testicles that remain undescended may be damaged. This could affect fertility later or lead to other medical problems when the baby boy grows older. http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/cryptorchidism.html

Hi mummy... was your baby born prematurely? I found this bit of information on WebMD and I hope it clears your concerns. "It is most common in baby boys who were born before their due date or who were very small at birth. Doctors don't really know what causes an undescended testicle. This common condition runs in some families (can be inherited). Most of the time, the testicle descends (drops) on its own by the time the baby is 3 months old. If your baby's testicle hasn't dropped by the time he is 6 months of age, your doctor may suggest treatment."

It is not normal but an undescended testicle (testis) is more common in boys who are born prematurely.
