I see all these videos online with mums squatting during delivery as gravity helps push the baby out. Is that true?? Is squatting the best way to deliver a baby?

It is true that gravity will aid in the delivery of baby when in a squatting (or any upright position). Some advantageous of being in this position for delivery include: - Helps in widening the pelvic outlet - Requires less bearing down effort - Help bring on urge to push - Allows mother freedom to shift her weight for greater comfort - Is a mechanical advantage as upper trunk is pushing down on uterus This position can help ease mothers with discomfort due to orthopedic issues, such as: - Coccydynia (pain at the end of tailbone - Spondylolisthesis (forwards displacement of a vertebra) - Spinal Stenosis However, it is not recommended for woman with certain conditions, such as: - Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (intense pelvic pain resulting from separation of symphysis pubis, a joint in the front part of the pelvic bone structure) - Experienced discongenic pain (pain origination from a damaged vertebral disc) - Sacroiliac dysfunction Speak to your doctor If you are considering this option. Studies have shown that squatting can reduce the length of labour but it must be done correctly at the correct time to be effective. By forcing your upper leg bones to act like levers on your pelvic bones, you can widen your pelvic opening by 20 to 30 percent. The position also increases the amount of oxygen brought to the uterine muscles and baby, helps to dilate the cervix, relieve pain. All of that (plus the obvious gravity component) can help speed up the process, too. But squats can be taxing on your body and that's where supported squats come in. A partner, doula or nurse can help hold you up while you squat, so you can focus on your breathing techniques and save energy that you'll surely need later throughout labour and delivery. http://www.parents.com/pregnancy/giving-birth/preparing-for-labor/squatting-birth/

They say squatting is a great position because it uses gravity to push the baby down and shortens the birth canal so it is not as far for baby to travel. You should definitely talk to your doctor about what positions they allow and if they have a birthing bar, birthing balls, or a stool that you can use.
